Sarah Jessica Parker makes her son wear hand-me-downs. I wore hand-me-downs. My mother made we wear them but only for the sole fact of that we're dirt poor.
I actually kind of praise that SJP's trying to retain her humbleness. I hear she's a lot of that and God love her for it because like me, she too was once dirt poor too and I understand. I really really really understand. I do. Even though I don't have to share a twin bed with anyone anymore, I am much too used to shoving someone while their feet are in my face so now that I sleep by myself, I sleep with body sized pillows and multiple covers to simulate someone being there.
It grows on you and when you get money, you have a hard time growing out of it, if you do at all.
Like SJP, maybe I could become a poor person with lots of money. But definitely not rich. I'm use to being poor and while a Gucci couch, a Swarovski studded bathtub and a closet resembling the monster with its own zip code that is the Saks shoe store, would all be pretty nice to have, it's not necessary. I could be crapping money by the time i'm 40 but i'd still be switching off lights so the electricity bill doesn't get high.
But I digress, if SJP is making insane amounts of money, the least she could do is not subject her son completely to what being poor is like (it's a horrible way to live, obviously).
And maybe buy him a fresh pack of underoos.
Anyway, I saw Maria Shriver on Oprah a couple of weeks ago and I kind of want to read her book, Just Who Will You Be? and came across an interview with her in the latest issue of Time (The 100 most influental peoples issue) and I loved her answer to how she helps her kids become who they are.
"I try to say to my children, I love you for who you are. You don't have to get into some fancy college. You don't have to go off and become President of the United States. If you want togo off and open a coffee shop or a bakery, I love you. And you alone, are good enough.
Geh. I want Maria Shriver to be my mom. Tell your mamma you love her on Sunday! Lots! I will! Or else you'll find her like this...
